The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has just released a Protocol Cluster priority roadmap through the end of 2029. The core goal is very clear: to achieve full-layer quantum-resilient capabilities for Ethereum L1, and the timeline is aligned with major tech giants such as Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.

The roadmap begins with the Glamsterdam upgrade. After that, there will be a hard fork on average every 7.2 months. After going through five hard forks in total, full quantum-resilient capabilities will be achieved in the L* phase. In the meantime, a Minimum Viable Post-Quantum (MV-PQ) milestone, J*, will be established as a transitional safety guarantee.

In addition to quantum resilience, the team is simultaneously advancing five cross-fork research directions: fast finality, quantum resilience, privacy, state and zkEVM, covering the key pain points for Ethereum protocol upgrades.

It’s worth noting that the upcoming Hegotá upgrade itself is not a complete post-quantum upgrade, but it is a critical milestone that determines whether subsequent upgrades can proceed on time. This upgrade will lock in two major proposals: the consensus-layer EIP-7805 (FOCIL) and the execution-layer EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions).

Quantum computing threats to existing cryptographic systems are no longer a distant concern. Ethereum has been laying out its roadmap early and steadily pushing upgrades to prepare for long-term security. What do you think of this move?
