BREAKING: Vitalik Says AI Is Unlikely to Break Bitcoin
Investor Liron Shapira put 50% odds on BTC falling 50% or more in two years. His reason: AI would weaken trust in Bitcoin’s security. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said he disagrees.
Buterin split the risk in two. Software around the network — clients and mining pools — can be upgraded if AI finds bugs. A real break of Bitcoin’s hashes or proof-of-work is much harder. He called that chance “tiny.”
The two sides:
> Shapira: 50% chance of a 50%+ crash in two years
> reason: AI hurts Bitcoin’s security story
> Buterin: the opposite view
> patches can fix network-layer attacks
> breaking hashes or PoW is “tiny”
> about 90% of his net worth is already on that view
That matters because “AI finds a bug” is not the same as “AI breaks SHA-256.” Only the second one would force a hard change to Bitcoin itself.
He is not saying the price cannot drop. He is saying he does not expect AI to crack the core.
