Who’s still drinking milk coffee? Convenience stores have quietly switched the lead role

Have you noticed? Oat milk and coconut water on the shelves are now more eye-catching than plain milk. These used to be just coffee companions, but now they’re stealing the spotlight.

Convenience stores know best how to make money off lazy people. Iced cups with tea coffee are already out; what young people want now is the kind of “looks healthy” mystique. Oat milk says zero sucrose, coconut water is labeled with electrolytes, and even mineral water has to be mildly alkaline.

The longer the ingredient list, the more anxious your wallet gets. Those colorful plant-based drinks cost just a few bucks to make, but with different packaging they can sell for fifteen. But there’s nothing to be done—who told us we’re so into “niche ingredients”?

Don’t talk to me about nutritional value. What this generation of workers is buying is just psychological comfort. What you’re drinking isn’t a beverage, it’s the illusion that “I’m living healthily.”

Just one question: how much extra have you paid for something that “looks healthy”?
