Something major happened to Bitcoin sidechain Liquid: the wallet balance dropped straight from 4,200 coins to 207 coins 💥
The nearly 4,000 BTC that were moved away are worth more than $300 million at current prices.
There was also a message left on-chain: We are white hats, contact on-chain 💸
Was it a white-hat rescue, or theft dressed up in different words? No one dares make a firm call right now 😅
Liquid has already paused its bridge nodes, and exchanges have also stopped LBTC deposits and withdrawals.
Normal withdrawals use a 15-of-11 multisig setup, along with a whitelist.
This time, either someone among the 11 signers signed off, or the whitelist was bypassed. Neither explanation looks good 🤔
After the coins were moved, they stayed inactive and were not mixed.
Analysts say this looks more like a white hat proactively extracting funds, rather than a hacker rushing to cash out 👀
But either way, sidechain security just got slapped hard this time 💢
