🚗⚡ The electric car of the future may have a gasoline engine

Automakers are betting on a hybrid solution for one of the biggest obstacles for electric vehicles: range and the fear of running out of charge.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Hyundai, Ford, and Stellantis are preparing the so-called EREVs (Extended-Range Electric Vehicles). They remain essentially electric cars: the wheels are driven by the electric motor, while a small gasoline engine works as a generator to recharge the battery when needed.

Stellantis plans to launch this technology in the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the Ram 1500 REV, with a promised range of up to 1,110 km. Hyundai is preparing an EREV version of the Santa Fe for 2027, while Ford is studying a similar solution for its pickup lineup.

💡 The idea is simple: drive like an electric car day to day, but have a gasoline “plan B” for long trips.

The move also reveals an important shift in the industry: instead of betting exclusively on the immediate replacement of combustion engines with pure electric ones, automakers are looking for a middle ground that reduces range anxiety and dependence on charging infrastructure.
