A lot of people ask: can Binance / the "trending leaderboard" on various platforms really be used as free alpha?
My answer: yes, but you have to look at it differently.
The essence of a trending leaderboard is: "what are the most people searching for and talking about right now?" It tells you where market attention is, and that’s genuinely useful — attention is short-term buying power. The problem is that by the time you see it on the list, it has often already made a move, and if you rush in, you’re probably handing your money to the early buyers.
So how can you use it without losing money? Here are a few things I’ve observed:
Look for coins that are "on the list but haven’t pumped hard yet": if a coin just appears on a new ranking, its market cap isn’t too exaggerated, and it hasn’t been hyped everywhere by influencers, it may actually be an early signal;
Look for "an entire sector appearing on the list together": for example, if several privacy coins or ZK-related coins suddenly pop up today, that suggests a whole theme is moving, which is more credible than a single coin;
Always assume the leaderboard is PvP: memecoins make up a big share of trend lists, and memecoins are a zero-sum game — every cent you make is someone else’s loss, so don’t hold them with a "value investing" mindset;
Use a hard stop-loss: if your strategy is to chase listings on the leaderboard, you must keep each position small and exit when the stop-loss hits. Don’t overstay.
The most dangerous way to use it: seeing a coin surge on the leaderboard, FOMO-ing into a full-size position, and even adding leverage. Stories like this create waves of liquidations in every bull market.
My view (not investment advice): a trending leaderboard is a "sentiment thermometer," not a "get-rich code." You can use it to sense direction, but not as a buy/sell command. If you really want to make money with it, it comes down to who sees it earlier, uses a lighter position size, and moves faster.
