AI singing costs money, and the copyright hammer has struck first.

Sony and Warner have teamed up to encircle Anthropic, and this is a ruthless move. The music giants are not arguing with OpenAI; they’re directly squeezing the throat of the most heavily funded AI company.

Put simply, lyrics and melodies are the lifeblood of record labels. AI training used them without permission, and now the owners want rent. That’s perfectly reasonable. Don’t talk about how technological innovation needs leniency—would you be okay if your songs were freeloaded off?

If this lawsuit is decided in the labels’ favor, it will draw a red line for the entire AI industry: data can be fed in, but copyright fees have to be paid. From here on out, the cost of training large models is going to skyrocket, and small companies simply won’t be able to afford it.

My guess is that the most likely ending is a settlement, with the giants getting paid and Anthropic paying some tuition. But the ones who should really be panicking are the little AI shops that rely on web crawlers to stockpile data. This round is meant to warn others by striking an example.

Do you think AI-written songs count as creation or plagiarism? Let’s talk in the comments.
