Sony: Digital Games Aren’t Actually Owned.

Sony says “reasonable consumers” understand that digital PlayStation games are licensed, not owned outright. The company pointed to its Terms of Service and software license agreements in a recent court filing.

The argument comes as Sony faces a class-action lawsuit over California’s AB 2426, with plaintiffs claiming consumers were misled about ownership of digitally purchased games.

Sony says the ability for multiple people to buy the same digital game makes the idea of exclusive ownership unrealistic. The company has also reminded users that purchases are personal licenses for private use.

The shift toward digital gaming is only accelerating, with Sony reportedly planning to stop producing physical discs for new games from January 2028.
