Stablecoin companies are lining up to become banks, and this time they’ve secured a national bank charter
On September 2, OCC gave OpenReserve an initial conditional approval
Notice the wording: it’s not the final license, and there are still a pile of conditions ahead
The company was founded in 2025, and its founder is a former executive at MoneyLion
Its seed round raised $25 million, led by an a16z-affiliated fund
Most other crypto companies have obtained trust bank charters, which allow custody but not lending
OpenReserve wants the full package
Deposits covered by federal deposit insurance, traditional lending, stablecoin issuance, 24/7 on-chain settlement
All packed into the same bank
This move is essentially placing stablecoin business directly on top of the traditional banking framework
There’s really only one thing the industry is watching: can deposit insurance and stablecoin redemption truly be connected
If it works, will other stablecoin brands follow
The launch time for the service has not been announced yet, and the stablecoin structure under the new charter has not been disclosed
A single piece of initial approval paperwork has already kept the market talking all day
Is this crypto surrendering to regulation
Or has the banking paradigm finally been pried open a crack
