-- The Portuguese government approved on Friday an investment plan worth 2.3 billion euros ($2.67 billion) to tackle the worsening waste disposal crisis through 2030, amid declining landfill capacity in the country.
State Minister Antonio Leitao Amaro said that 13 of Portugal's 32 landfill sites are nearing full capacity, describing the situation as one of the country's biggest "hidden problems."
Government data show that Portugal generates 5.3 million tons of municipal waste annually, 59% of which ends up in landfills. This rate exceeds both the national target and the European Union's goal of reducing this share to 10% by 2035.
Leitao Amaro said: "We need to act now and act decisively, as Portugal is running out of places to dispose of its waste."
