Base Labs has announced its formation as an independent research organization focused on advancing open-source AI. According to ChainCatcher, the group said it believes in a healthy and open frontier model ecosystem and will conduct scientific research in an open manner.

Base Labs said it will pursue blue-sky research in continual learning, reinforcement learning science, and full-lifecycle model learning mechanisms, while publicly sharing all experiments and recipes. It also plans to build BaseHub Data Foundry to provide open reinforcement learning environments, training data, and real-world benchmarks, and to improve open-source model capability, safety, and alignment through ongoing post-training and a frontier safety stack.

The organization added that it is also studying model performance to reduce costs and improve results. Base Labs said the work is mission-driven rather than a commercial product, and it is currently hiring engineers, researchers, and research scholars.
