According to financial statements consulted by The Guardian, Emil Michael, the undersecretary of Defense for research and engineering, sold his stake in Perplexity AI in June for an amount between $5 million and $25 million. This sale is his third divestment of AI-related shares this year, after a $24 million profit from xAI in January and at least $5 million from a stake in Brex in April.
Michael was the public face of the Pentagon in its push to blacklist Anthropic, even as the company is in direct competition with Perplexity and xAI for government contracts. A federal judge overturned the blacklist order last week, ruling that it was illegal retaliation.
