Bank of Japan policy board member Hajime Takata, in recent remarks, sent extremely hawkish signals, clearly indicating that it does not rule out consecutive and sizable rate hikes. He even suggested that a single 25-basis-point hike is not the upper limit. The comments quickly triggered volatility in the FX market: the yen strengthened against the U.S. dollar, rising 0.5% to 159.44, reversing earlier weakness that had briefly pushed the pair down to 160.39. Aozora Bank’s analysis noted that Takata’s statements on the pace and magnitude of rate hikes are clearly more aggressive than the recent tone from the BOJ’s governor and deputy governor.

The importance of this signal lies in its potential impact on global liquidity conditions. For a long time, low-cost global funding has relied heavily on Japan’s negative interest rates and ultra-loose policy. Now, BOJ officials have demonstrated a commitment to tightening beyond market expectations, shattering any hope of “gradual and mild” hikes. This also means that the risk of large-scale unwinding of the yen carry trade is rising again, and the specter of liquidity flowing the other way grows even darker.

For traditional financial markets, stronger yen typically comes with upward pressure on the yield curve, directly lifting global cross-asset borrowing costs. With the dollar/yen under downward pressure, core sovereign bonds such as U.S. Treasuries may also face selling pressure as overseas capital turns back toward home markets. Tighter liquidity and higher borrowing costs are certain to exert broad, systematic valuation pressure on overvalued global risk assets.

For the crypto market, any tightening of macro liquidity deserves heightened vigilance. If the yen carry trade is forced to be unwound quickly, not only traditional equities will face pressure, but leveraged institutional capital in crypto could also face drawdown risk. Against the backdrop of policy divergences and a rise in risk-off sentiment, risk assets led by $BTC may experience liquidity squeezes in the near term, and investors should guard against the potential risk of intensified downside volatility.
