Today, the three memory-chip price tiers are moving rather unevenly. $MU is quoted at $958.73, up 2.77%; over the past 14 days it has accumulated a gain of 5%. After breaking the 1,000 mark last week and then slipping for two days, it has crawled back up again—HBM is still providing support along this main line. $STX is quoted at $828.38, down slightly by 0.17%; over the past 14 days, however, it is down 5.67%, going in the opposite direction of the first one. In terms of demand, the hard-disk drive segment has not been able to catch its breath. $WDC is quoted at $450.55, down 1.94%; over the past 14 days it is nearly flat—making it the weakest among the three, having slid more than 40% from its intra-year highs.
The US dollar index is stuck at 99.47 at the high end. The 10-year US Treasury yield is 4.778%. The 30-year US Treasury yield has, at one point this month, pushed above 5%, setting the longest streak since 2006. On the funding-cost front, this line is keeping valuations under pressure. The tier that profits by riding up memory prices to generate cash flow still has a story to tell; the other two tiers that are purely HDD-focused can only look at demand and hope for the best. With the three-tier divergence continuing, the pattern may have to run for a while.
