SK hynix Considers Japan Memory Chip Plant as AI Demand Surges

South Korean memory-chip giant SK hynix is exploring the possibility of establishing a memory-chip production facility in Japan, potentially through a joint venture, as demand for AI-related memory continues to accelerate.

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won said the company is reviewing locations across Japan, with access to reliable power and water among the key considerations. However, SK hynix has not yet finalized a specific location, partner, investment amount, or production plan.

The move would expand SK hynix’s global manufacturing footprint at a time when demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and other advanced memory products is rising rapidly due to the global AI infrastructure boom.

SK hynix is already pursuing major capacity expansion elsewhere. The company plans to invest around $39 billion in South Korea, while its recently announced Indiana project represents an investment of more than $4 billion focused on advanced HBM packaging and related capabilities.

Japan could offer SK hynix another strategic advantage through its established semiconductor ecosystem, including suppliers of chipmaking equipment and materials. The country is also actively encouraging semiconductor investment as it works to strengthen its domestic chip industry.

The bigger picture is clear: AI is reshaping the global memory-chip market. As AI data centers require increasingly powerful processors and massive amounts of high-speed memory, companies such as SK hynix are racing to secure production capacity before supply constraints become a bigger bottleneck.
