NASA Is Sending a Nuclear-Powered Spacecraft to Mars in 2028.

NASA’s Space Reactor-1 Freedom is targeting late 2028 to become the first fission-powered interplanetary spacecraft, demonstrating nuclear-electric propulsion on a Mars flyby mission.

Nuclear-electric propulsion uses propellant far more efficiently than conventional chemical systems, potentially opening the door to much more ambitious deep-space missions.

The next space race may be powered by nuclear energy.
