Breaking: U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Japan holds between $1.1 trillion and $1.2 trillion in U.S. Treasury bonds and owes the U.S. Treasury Department no debts. Japan remains the largest foreign holder of U.S. government debt, making it one of Washington’s most important creditor nations. In late July to early August 2026, the U.S. and Japan carried out coordinated currency intervention actions for the first time in more than a decade. The U.S. Treasury pledged to contribute $5 billion to $10 billion to support the yen. Tokyo also carried out additional large-scale interventions, estimated at $52 billion to $54 billion.
