The United States is preparing to use a meeting of the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in Asheville, North Carolina, to press member countries regarding the sanctions imposed on Iran, in parallel with discussions on global growth files, trade imbalances, and sovereign debts.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to chair the group’s meetings on Monday and Tuesday, during which Washington will seek to push members to take steps to bolster global growth, reduce trade imbalances, and support more resilient supply chains, especially in energy and vital resource sectors.
But the most sensitive matter will be Iran, as Bessent is expected to tell his counterparts that continued access to the dollar-based financial system will be linked to compliance with U.S. sanctions on Tehran. This issue is expected to be raised during the bilateral meetings the American minister will hold with officials from the G20 countries.
