CoinShares: bureaucracy in the US turned miners into beneficiaries of an AI paper

Demand for capacity in American data centers is enormous, and the share of idle capacity has fallen from 10% in 2019 to about 1%.

Moratoriums and restrictions on building new facilities have reached a record level, and the capacity waiting to be connected is around 2060 GW. This is 1.6 times the total capacity of all existing power plants in the US (1300 GW).

Given that, on average, it takes about five years to connect a new facility to the power grid, data centers that are already connected have a significant price premium. And miners already own the necessary infrastructure, and they have no regulatory obstacles to redirecting capacity to AI.

“Therefore, we are seeing the share of revenue from artificial intelligence in the mining sector grow from 30% to, in our estimates, 70% by the end of the year, and possibly even higher,” CoinShares wrote.
