Users of crypto exchange Kraken were hit by a “dust attack” from HTX exchange addresses
American crypto exchange Kraken temporarily limited access to an unspecified number of customer accounts after attackers sent thousands of microtransactions to their addresses from wallets associated with the crypto exchange HTX, which has been sanctioned by the US and the EU, Coindesk reports.
The incident occurred from August 17 to 24 amid the EU ban on transactions involving HTX taking effect. According to analytics platform Arkham Intelligence, nearly 12,000 transactions in small amounts were sent from wallets identified as belonging to HTX to deposit addresses of Kraken customers—ranging from a few cents to a couple of dollars.
In Kraken itself, they confirmed that they had faced an attack, the presumed goal of which was to trigger an automatic blocking of users’ accounts.
HTX, advised by TRON blockchain founder Justin Sun, denied any involvement in the incident. The exchange said that an internal review found no connection between official accounts and the microtransactions.
