Two Solana proposals start voting today. Honestly, this one is pretty critical. A lot of people have been talking about SIMD-0553 and SIMD-0550 lately, but most of the content has been a bit dry. I gathered the information I can currently find and tried to put it into plain language.
Let’s start with the problem at hand.
Solana destroys about 600+ SOL every day, but inflation is still spitting out 50,000–60,000 SOL per day. Even if transaction volume is higher, the burned amount is still just a drop in the bucket. Priority fees have already been 100% going to validators (after 2024’s SIMD-96), so what can actually be burned is only half of the base fee. That’s why the community keeps arguing: either burn more, or emit less.
