Why This Speech Matters

Kevin Warsh is scheduled to deliver his first speech as Fed Chair at Jackson Hole today at 10 AM ET, an event widely regarded as the Fed’s most consequential annual gathering for setting market expectations.

The event carries historical weight, pointing to 2022, when then-Chair Jerome Powell’s hawkish tone triggered a sharp market decline, and 2025, when a bullish tone from Powell drove a same-day 5% rally in crypto.

Analyst Michaël van de Poppe said the choppy price action seen across markets this week may have been driven by uncertainty ahead of the speech, adding that a dovish tone from Warsh would be well received by traders.

Scenario 1: A Hawkish Tone Could Trigger a Sell-Off

If Warsh delivers a firm anti-inflation message, signals potential rate hikes in September, or pushes back against Treasury involvement in monetary policy, expect the reaction to be negative. A hawkish tone would likely tighten liquidity and strengthen the dollar, conditions that have historically pressured crypto prices. Under this scenario, some market experts see Bitcoin testing support near $75,500, with Ethereum and XRP following it lower.

Scenario 2: A Dovish Tone Could Fuel a Rally

Alternatively, if Warsh signals coordination with the Treasury’s bond-buyback program, acknowledges economic tailwinds from AI investment, or strikes a welcoming tone toward stablecoins and digital assets in line with the conference’s “Financial Innovation” theme, the reaction could be positive. A weaker dollar and improved liquidity conditions could help Bitcoin clear resistance near $83,000, with Ethereum and XRP positioned to extend gains alongside it.

What History Shows About Fed Speeches and Crypto

Crypto markets have a track record of reacting sharply to Fed commentary, particularly from Warsh since taking the Fed Chair role:

  • June 2026: Warsh ended the Fed’s practice of issuing forward guidance and dot plots, and the resulting uncertainty sent Bitcoin down to $64,535, Ethereum to $1,751 and XRP to $1.18.

  • April 2026: During his Senate confirmation hearing, Warsh stressed Fed independence and inflation control, and Bitcoin dropped below $75,000 alongside a broader altcoin sell-off.

  • July 2026: Warsh’s comments that inflation risks were easing helped push Bitcoin back above $60,000.

What Traders Are Watching

With Warsh known for avoiding traditional forward guidance, market participants are bracing for elevated volatility regardless of tone. The direction of Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and other altcoins  in the hours following the speech will likely hinge on whether Warsh’s remarks are read as a signal of tightening ahead or easing conditions to come.
