**Apple** is seeing mounting reports that the iPhone 18 Pro Max, to be unveiled on September 9, will feature a variable-aperture camera. Meanwhile, there are signs that the standard Pro models of the same generation could be released without this feature, lending momentum to a strategy focused on ‘spec differentiation’ centered on higher-end models.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: A “solo showdown” for camera features
Apple announced that it will hold a new product launch event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino on September 9 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time (local time, August 26) through an official announcement on August 26 (local time). This event will be the first major launch gathering under the new CEO, John Ternus, who took over following Tim Cook **(Tim Cook)**.
Alongside the two Pro lineups, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to take the stage. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 was left out of this event and is reportedly being pushed to a separate event in the spring of 2027, according to talk in the market.
Ice Universe, known for sharing leaked IT information from China, said in this month’s report that it overturned a two-year market assumption that a variable aperture would be included across both the Pro and Pro Max. Instead, it claimed the feature would be exclusive to the Pro Max only.
Up to now, iPhone has never adopted a mechanically opening and closing aperture. For the main camera, a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture has been maintained since the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022. If a variable aperture is actually included only in the Pro Max, then it would become the only “next-generation camera” model across the entire lineup.

“The invitation contains a hint” Mark Gurman’s interpretation
Apple industry analyst **Mark Gurman** also added weight to this claim. He interpreted the light effect behind the Apple logo used on the event invitation as suggesting a mechanical aperture to be built into the Pro Max. At the same time, he said the invitation’s blue tint appears to connect with a new set of blue finishing colors, and that the color lineup could include four options—along with dark cherry, black, and silver.
A variable aperture works by directly controlling the amount of light entering the sensor, and its key is to create an “optical” background blur (bokeh) rather than relying on software correction. Apple currently achieves a similar effect computationally through Portrait mode.
In addition, market consensus suggests that the two Pro models will also come with the same core components: the 2-nanometer-process A20 Pro chip, Apple’s own-designed C2 modem, and a slimmer Dynamic Island design.
iPhone 18 Pro Max: What the price and precedent suggest
One market outlook predicts in its report that the iPhone 18 Pro Max price could rise by as much as $300 compared with an iPhone 17 Pro-class model. Ongoing increases in component unit costs since June and memory supply shortages are cited as the reasons for the price hike.
So far, Apple has made no official comments about its pricing policy—or about the leaked hardware information as a whole. The figures being discussed in the market remain nothing more than analyst estimates and observations from the supply chain.
Separately, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is also said to have an increased battery capacity and the possibility of including long-range optical zoom. In regulatory filings submitted to Chinese authorities, it’s reported that the battery cell capacity listed is close to about 5,600mAh.
Apple has a history of differentiating cameras by reserving advanced features for its top models only. In 2023, Apple first introduced a tetraprism telephoto lens exclusively on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the following year expanded the same lens to both Pro lineups. Observers also note that this year’s “Pro Max-only” strategy may just be a transitional measure.
