California’s legislature has officially passed AB 2409: it bans state and local public officials from issuing meme coins, and starting January 1, 2027, restricts digital asset platforms from offering official-linked tokens to California residents. After the bill passed the Senate on August 26, the Assembly passed it unanimously 78–0, and it now only awaits Governor Gavin Newsom’s signature.

Making it specific: this law doesn’t ban all meme coins across the board—it targets “official-linked tokens.” The definition covers tokens backed by attention and speculation, such as those tied to memes/emojis, celebrities, animals, and cultural phenomena. The consequences for violations are harsh: the Attorney General can apply for injunctions + seize illegal proceeds, and district attorneys also have enforcement authority. The backdrop is the huge controversy caused by the official TRUMP coin launched in January 2025.

Cross-analysis: from the SEC to state legislation, regulators are tightening the net around “political coins.” What really matters isn’t one state’s action, but the fact that the path of “officials issuing coins” is being legally shut down—so future political figures won’t find it so easy to slice the pie by leveraging their identities.

Risk hedging: cold water—this bill is still waiting for the governor’s signature, and it only applies to California residents. There’s currently no corresponding legislation at the federal level, and other states may not follow. Don’t treat regulatory news as a trading signal.

👀 Should “officials issuing coins” be banned entirely? Time to take a side—see you in the comments!
