Behind Poland’s blocked crypto legislation, it turns out there’s a whole pile of luxury watches and election money 💸
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has spoken openly: he’s finally figured out why President Andrzej Duda (a.k.a. “Nawrotzs ky”) and the opposition PiS have been “digging in” to obstruct the crypto bill—because funds leaked from the Zondacrypto exchange and its affiliated legal firms were turned into things worth €40,000: Patek Philippe watches, media manipulation, campaign activities, and right-wing political figures’ foundations.
Previously, Tusk’s camp repeatedly pushed crypto-market regulatory legislation to align with EU rules, but the president kept vetoing it with the rationale that “overly strict regulation would drive the crypto industry away.” Ironically, the real threat to the crypto industry isn’t regulation—it’s backroom deals between power and capital.
Even more explosive: the chairman of Poland’s National Olympic Committee, Piesiewicz, has been arrested by police, suspected of accepting expensive watches gifted by the CEO of Zondacrypto in exchange for regulatory protection.
When “protecting the industry” becomes a cover for funneling interests, the real obstacles to crypto legislation become obvious. Poland’s path to crypto legislation will likely have to first get over the hurdle of corruption.
