Finance Minister Carney heard from senior economists in the country that the damage caused by an escalating trade war with the United States should be manageable. François-Philippe Champagne, the finance minister, held a special meeting with top economists in Toronto to discuss outlooks following the collapse of trade talks with the United States, according to Bloomberg.
The United States imposed tariffs of 50% on roughly $20,000,000,000 in Canadian imports on Saturday, including electrical equipment, plastics, and plywood. The tariffs come in addition to previous U.S. taxes on steel, cars, aluminum, wood, and other products.
The economists participating in the meeting said the Canadian economy is strong enough to absorb measures imposed by President Donald Trump, with expectations that the harm will be concentrated in the sectors affected by these tariffs. Bloomberg, citing some attendees, said there was little discussion of recession risks during the meeting.
