—— True maturity is accepting the differences in each other's viewpoints, while still holding to a common direction amid disagreements.

The Hexagram Bi teaches us that even when perspectives differ, we can still respect one another and complement each other.

“Bi,” means to deviate, differ, and fall into disagreement.

People cannot possibly be completely identical.

A family has differences among its members; a team has different interests and stances; a company has differing strategic opinions; and society is even more so.

The truly dangerous thing is never the existence of disagreement, but rather when—because of disagreement—people deny each other, eventually turning “differences in viewpoints” into “conflict between relationships.”

(I Ching) says: “Bi—small matters bring good fortune.”

(Commentary on the Judgement) It says: “Bi—fire moves upward, while lake water moves downward. Two girls live together, but their intentions are not the same.”

You may be in the same system, yet you can move in different directions;

Your relationship may be close, but you may not share the same ranking of values.

The hexagram “Bi” emphasizes this: acknowledge differences, respect differences, and within differences, find the parts that allow us to move forward together.

✨ The simplest enlightenment from the six lines

Hexagram 54: Fire over Lake (Bi, Separation)|Upper Li ☲ and Lower Dui ☱

Hexagram 9, Line 5|Regret is gone. Losing a horse—do not go after it. In the end, you will find your way back; when you see a bad person, there is no blame.

👉 When disagreement first arises, be careful not to rush to argue or forcefully persuade the other party.

First, steady yourself, leave space for each other, and there’s no need to fight to win or lose.

Hexagram 9, Line 2|Meeting the chief in the alley; no blame.

👉 First look for shared interests, then make room for each other’s differences.

Between people, you don’t need to pursue 100% agreement.

Hexagram Line 3|Seeing the dragging cart, and the ox is pulled off course. Its people, from heaven down to it, get cut—no beginning, yet there is an end.

👉 Once disagreement escalates, it’s easiest to pull at each other and wear each other down

Even if the beginning is difficult, as long as you stop self-consuming, there is still a chance to break the deadlock—don’t cling to winning the argument; prioritize restoring the system’s normal operation.

Hexagram 9, Line 4|Losing sight of the isolated (lone) one. Meet the prime husband. And there is mutual sincerity; it is severe—yet no blame.

👉 When you are isolated, don’t drift into stubbornness or easily give up your own judgment.

What matters isn’t how many people support you, but whether you can find partners who are honest and trusting—any relationship without trust is the biggest hidden danger.

Hexagram Line 5|Regret is gone. One’s ancestors chew on the skin; where would there be blame?

👉 The root of contradictions often is that everyone focuses on right and wrong, but forgets the shared needs. Return to shared interests and rebuild trustworthy connections—many deadlocks will resolve themselves.

To resolve disagreement, it may not be persuasion that matters most—it’s finding the goals that both sides truly care about.

Top Nine|In separation and loneliness, you see a boar dragging in the mud; you load ghosts into a whole cart. First draw the bowstring, then release it. It is not a bandit’s pursuit; rather, it’s meeting in courtship. When you encounter rain, it will be auspicious.

👉 Treating dissent as hostility easily turns collaborators into opponents.

Many conflicts don’t require one side to fully conquer the other; it’s enough to let emotions subside, so both sides can see each other again.

💰 Trading & investing: Opportunities are hidden in disagreement

In investing, fundamentally, it is about learning to live with “Bi” (separation/disagreement).

The existence of disagreement between bulls and bears is precisely the source of price fluctuations.

If everyone’s views are completely identical, the market loses the foundation for trading.

Investors don’t need to fear disagreement, but must watch out for being swept up by the emotions of the crowd.

Going against the grain is not the same as deliberately moving against the crowd just to be different.

Your viewpoints may differ, but your position size must have limits;

Judgment can be wrong, but risk must be controllable;

The market may be crazy, but you must stay clear-minded.

When the market speaks with one voice, feel free to ask one more question:

Who else still holds a different view?

And what does this disagreement really mean?

Is risk expanding, or is the market repricing?

What investing truly needs is not always standing on the side of the minority, but rather:

Be bold enough to make independent judgments, and also bold enough to bear the cost of your judgments.

🧘 Life training: Accepting differing opinions is the beginning of maturity

Much suffering comes from a certain fixation:

Parents hope their children live by their own experiences;

Couples hope the other expresses in their own way;

Leaders hope employees fully understand their decisions;

Friends hope that they each hold the same value judgments.

Maturity is no longer being fixated on changing others.

You may disagree with me, but it doesn’t prevent us from respecting each other;

You can choose a different life, but it doesn’t prevent me from blessing your choice;

We can stand in different positions and still complete something together.

The wisdom of “Bi” is not to eliminate differences, but to master them.

Difference doesn’t mean opposition;

Disagreement is not the same as hostility;

Not agreeing doesn’t mean disrespect.

Hold on to your own judgment, and also make room for others’ differences.

Seeking common ground while allowing differences is vision;

Mutual respect is about having proper boundaries;

Independent judgment is clarity;

Mutual fulfillment—this is maturity.
