Maximum “confidentiality” for the digital euro: can the ECB keep its word?
Maximum confidentiality, a verbal promise. The European Central Bank says it plainly in writing:
• the digital euro will offer “the highest level of confidentiality that current technology allows.”
Piero Cipollone, a member of the ECB’s Executive Board, lays out this promise in an interview published on 24 August. On paper, the Eurosystem will not be able to identify any user, online or offline. We already explained why this promise is met with scepticism—between the French data protection authority (CNIL), its German counterpart, and a technical architecture still under construction.
Key points of this article:
• The ECB has promised that the digital euro would provide a maximum level of confidentiality, according to Piero Cipollone.
• Doubts remain about the technical ability to guarantee this promise, despite measures taken to strengthen confidentiality $EUR #EuropeanCentralBank
