Written to Myself at 28
Tonight I had a little alcohol and felt compelled to reflect. I don’t know which way I’m supposed to go. I’m 28—born in 1998. Standing at a fork in life, I once thought this would be an age full of infinite possibilities. But reality slapped me in the face: my career hasn’t taken off yet. Home is something I find hard to leave, yet hard to truly fit into, and I’m still on the road searching for myself. I don’t have extraordinary abilities or a breathtaking education. I look ordinary, my family is ordinary, I have a lot of desires, but my wallet is empty. I doubt myself while still clenching my teeth and pushing forward. While yearning for a better future, I fix my eyes on money and on earning a good living—trying to make sure my family can live well. My parents are getting older; each year makes them look more worn and more world-weary. Wrinkles and gray hair have already appeared on their faces. And yet I still couldn’t—
bring them the pride they deserve. I’m truly ashamed!
Before I know it, I’m already 28. So fast… The wasted years of my life are beyond 28, but it feels like I’ve just let time slip away, with no drive or progress. For years I’ve been hustling from all directions, running east and west; I’ve stumbled and fallen, yet I’ve achieved nothing. I’m filled with heartbreak.
Looking back, I don’t just feel like crying; I can’t help wishing I could buy cassia flowers and share wine with youth—but it never turns out the way I imagined. The fate is that flowers bloom again one day, but people can’t be young again. I thought my 28 was so far away, but when I look back, it’s right in front of me!
