In the quant system, option expiry is not something like a "calendar reminder"—it’s a parameter adjustment instruction that needs to be triggered automatically.
The reason is simple. Around large option expiries, the market microstructure typically undergoes three things: hedged positions need to be closed or rolled, causing a brief imbalance in buy/sell pressure between the spot and derivatives markets; implied volatility usually contracts before expiry, affecting the accuracy of a strategy’s volatility forecasting model; and the process of re-establishing leverage after expiry brings short-term liquidity fluctuations.
The way the program handles these recurring events is similar to how it processes macro data releases, but the logic is different—macro releases have an uncertain outcome, whereas option expiry has a known outcome (fixed expiry time, known distribution of strike prices); what’s uncertain is how market participants will react.
The system preloads a "derivatives expiry event calendar". Forty-eight hours before expiry, it automatically initiates several adjustments:
First, it reduces the density of order placement and the stop-loss sensitivity of the strategy near areas where strikes are heavily concentrated, to avoid triggering unnecessary stop-losses from irrational short-term price swings during a Gamma squeeze.
Second, it switches the reference window of the volatility prediction model from the past 7 days to the past 30 days—because the implied volatility structure before expiry is distorted, using the shorter window would skew the model’s judgment.
Third, on the day of expiry, the system relaxes the slippage-tolerance parameter for newly opened order instructions, since temporarily thinned liquidity can lead to a larger deviation between actual execution price and the expected price.
Without waiting to judge whether "this expiry will have an impact," the rules are written into the calendar—executed automatically at the right time and then automatically restored.
In this market, derivatives expiry is one of the few "known risks"—it will certainly come; it’s just that each time, the numbers change.
