I watched a video about dismantling an ATM and its cash withdrawal mechanism—it was pretty interesting. How does the machine recognize banknotes? How does it count them one by one clearly? How does it push the money out from the cash cassette? The whole sequence is even more precise than I imagined.
After watching, I felt something. When we withdraw money, we assume that machine will surely dispense the cash. But behind it is actually a whole centralized system supporting everything: bank ledgers, the clearing network, cash vault and armored transport, and machine maintenance—someone is always backing it up. What you trust is the institution, and the institution in turn guarantees that the money truly exists.
Cryptographic assets take a different path. There’s no ATM and no physical cash cassette. The value is transferred directly on-chain, peer to peer. The rules are written into code and run nonstop all day. Instead of trusting a particular bank, you trust a publicly verifiable mechanism itself.
Both systems are solving the same problem: making value move reliably. What’s the difference? One hands trust to people and institutions; the other hands trust to mathematics and consensus.
Technology isn’t “good” or “bad”—it’s just used in different ways. After watching this teardown, I’m actually clearer about why I keep a part of myself in both of these paths.
