Won in the first instance lawsuit; Bithumb was ordered to refund users about $145,000 of erroneously sent Bitcoin sale proceeds

Odaily Planet Daily, Aug. 27, 2026: In the first round of a creditor-claim lawsuit related to the "erroneously sent Bitcoin" incident, South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb won at trial. The court ruled that users who hold the erroneously sent Bitcoin sale proceeds must return approximately 194 million KRW, or about $145,000. In February this year, Bithumb mistakenly issued 620,000 Bitcoins as activity rewards—then worth about $5 billion. Bithumb subsequently launched a recovery process and reported in March that it had recovered 99% of the erroneously sent Bitcoins. This ruling is the first decision among four lawsuits filed by Bithumb against users who had not yet refunded. The court’s rationale and whether the defendant will appeal have not yet been disclosed.
