Robot Sector Sees Another Major Move 🤖
On August 27, it was reported that SoftBank is in talks to acquire a majority stake in humanoid robot company 1X Technologies. If the deal is completed successfully, 1X’s valuation could reach around $6 billion.
1X is not a brand-new company—it has been around for 12 years and has received support from OpenAI. Its focus is also very clear: to bring humanoid robots into ordinary households for real, helping people with chores and completing everyday tasks.
Behind this deal, you can actually see SoftBank’s ambitions. Masayoshi Son has long been optimistic about the combination of robotics and AI. He believes the truly big opportunities in the future will not just be AI on screens, but AI that has a “body”—able to enter the real world, work, and get things done.
It’s worth noting that 1X previously tried to raise $1 billion on a $10 billion valuation, but the final funding amount did not meet expectations. If SoftBank chooses to take control of the majority stake directly now, it would give 1X a stronger backer in terms of funding and resources.
AI has begun to move from “can chat and write code” to slowly becoming “can get hands-on and do work.” Whoever can first solve the cost, safety, reliability, and intelligence challenges of bringing robots into homes may be the one to grab the biggest slice of the next phase of the AI industry.
