【Bitcoin needs to defend against quantum hackers! Blockstream releases an upgrade plan 🔐⚡】

If quantum computers really arrive, can Bitcoin withstand them?

Scientists say: with a sufficiently powerful quantum computer, it can directly derive the private key from the public key—the wallet could be emptied.

Today, Blockstream has officially submitted a Bitcoin upgrade proposal for a post-quantum signature scheme, SHRINCS. 🤔

Why is this approach getting attention? Because it’s called the “first post-quantum signature scheme designed specifically for Bitcoin.”

And it’s not just talk on paper—SHRINCS has already produced real signatures for transactions on the Liquid sidechain. 😱

The key is size. Post-quantum signatures certified by NIST are currently 38 to 123 times larger; putting them on-chain would make Bitcoin too slow to use.

SHRINCS, however, is only about 9 times larger than existing signatures. Combined with Segregated Witness, it can still process about 3 transactions per second—roughly the same as today. 📊

Of course, there’s a trade-off: the security proof isn’t finished yet. Each time the signature is used, it grows by 16 bytes. If the device is lost, you’ll need to rely on a much larger backup transaction to recover.

In short: the plan is strong, but it’s still not fully ready for activation. 🔑

📌 Blockstream submits a Bitcoin upgrade proposal for the post-quantum signature scheme SHRINCS: the signature size is much smaller than the NIST standard approach, the impact on speed is minimal, and it has been tested on a sidechain; but the security proof isn’t complete and there are usage limitations. As the quantum threat draws nearer, Bitcoin’s technical backup is quickly taking shape.
