When I re-examined Dusk’s tokenomics, I found an easy-to-confuse point: the unlock schedule and value accumulation are two different things.

The initial allocation of 500 million tokens comes with various vesting and unlock arrangements—this is legacy. The additional issuance of another 500 million tokens over the next 30+ years is the protocol-level ongoing supply. These two figures are often discussed together, but they answer completely different questions. The former is about when the tokens can become transferable; the latter is about how the network uses inflation incentives to drive staking and maintain security.

What’s truly worth tracking is where the newly issued tokens actually go. Dusk reduces the incremental supply gradually using a geometric decay model: in the early stage, each block is close to about 20 tokens, but after 30 years it drops to near zero. The implied logic behind this design is that early on, inflation subsidies support stakers and validating nodes, and later, transaction fees take over.

The question is whether the handoff can hold. If, by the time the decay reaches the later stages, on-chain activity still doesn’t pick up, fee revenue won’t be enough to cover the operating costs of validators. Staking rewards would thin out quickly, and security could decline as a result. So the sustainability of the inflation model ultimately depends on whether real usage can be converted into sufficient on-chain fees.

I looked through the data in the browser: the gas usage and fee paid for each transaction can be checked, but activity levels are far from robust. After the mainnet has been running for more than half a year, the number of ecosystem projects still hovers in single digits, and on-chain call frequency isn’t high. Inflation continues to be released, but usage growth hasn’t kept up.

So when I look at Dusk’s token value, I won’t focus only on the unlock chart—I’ll focus on the share of block rewards that comes from transaction fees. If that ratio stays low for the long term, it means the value-capture mechanism hasn’t truly kicked in yet. No matter how clever the token design is, if it can’t be used, it’s just idle circulation.
