#dusk $DUSK I went through the balance types that might appear in the Dusk wallet and found that at least four different “balances” can be operating at the same time, but most interfaces only show a single number. The first is the total balance: the amount of DUSK recorded on-chain at your address. Second is the available balance, which subtracts what’s currently being staked. Third is active stake: the portion that truly participates in consensus. Fourth is locked stake: the part that’s staked but does not participate in consensus.
The problem is this: many wallets treat “total balance” as the money you can actually use. But in reality, if you stake 5000 DUSK, and 4500 of it is active while 500 is locked, your available balance is already reduced by 5000—but that locked 500 neither participates in consensus nor can be transferred. ETH users are used to thinking “balance – staked = available,” but Dusk adds another layer with the active/locked distinction, and the ETH logic doesn’t carry over well.
From the BTC perspective, under the UTXO model, balance is balance—there’s no in-between state like “locked but not working.” Dusk’s locked stake is a very special case: the coins are yours and they’re inside the staking contract, but they produce no rewards and don’t take part in elections. If users add more to staking without knowing the 90/10 rule, it’s easy to end up with locked stake and then wonder why the rewards aren’t calculated based on the total staked amount.
For the @Dusk ecosystem, this is the kind of issue that’s best solved at the UI layer, but also the easiest to overlook. What the $DUSK holders truly need is for the wallet to list five numbers separately: total balance, available balance, active stake, locked stake, and pending rewards. Right now, if only one number is shown, users may think they’re earning yield when, in fact, some portion of the coins may be “standing still” indefinitely. My next step will be to specifically compare how several major wallets display balances, to see which ones have made this clear. @Dusk
