OWNING A WHOLE BTC IS 70 TIMES RARER THAN BECOMING A MILLIONAIRE
A new estimate from River puts a striking number on Bitcoin ownership: only around 825,000 people worldwide own at least one whole Bitcoin, compared with roughly 57.5 million millionaires globally.
Using those figures, owning a full BTC is currently about 70 times rarer than becoming a millionaire.
River built its estimate using blockchain data while adjusting for BTC held through exchanges, corporate treasuries, governments and ETFs. The company therefore places the reasonable range between 600,000 and 1 million wholecoiners.
The key point is Bitcoin’s supply structure. The network has a maximum supply of 21 million BTC, but a portion of that supply is held by large institutions, ETFs, corporate treasuries or may no longer be actively circulating.
That makes owning one full BTC fundamentally different from holding a small fraction of Bitcoin. As institutional participation and traditional financial exposure continue to expand, the portion of supply directly accessible to individuals becomes increasingly important.
At the time of River’s estimate, BTC was trading around $79,134, down 1.96% over 24 hours.
One number cannot determine where Bitcoin’s price goes next, but it does highlight how scarce owning a full BTC may already be.
If the actual number of wholecoiners is somewhere between 600,000 and 1 million, how much rarer could owning 1 BTC become as Bitcoin becomes increasingly institutionalized?
