A record-setting round of short liquidations pushed Bitcoin up to $80,000, and also lifted Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) shares in the short term, but this wave of buying has not continued to spread in sync.
According to Barchart, during the 24 hours on August 20, about $2.7 billion of bearish positions in crypto were liquidated, including more than $1 billion in BTC short positions exiting within roughly an hour.
Liquidations first changed the passive buying inside derivatives, then pushed BTC higher, lifting high-beta crypto stocks like MSTR along with it.
As of 13:38, $BTC was at 79,070.0 USDT, down 2.1% over the past 24 hours, and the price has already returned below $80,000.
This suggests that sentiment and leverage previously squeezed shorts together, but whether spot demand will follow through has not yet been confirmed by the market.
I think it currently looks more like a short-term sentiment shock—unless BTC regains and holds above $80,000, MSTR’s rebound is likely to turn back into a high-volatility trade.
If BTC breaks below $79,000 and the liquidation wave stops, this assessment would no longer hold; conversely, only a volume-backed recovery above $80,000 would look more like expectations have truly been rewritten.
