mRNA tumor vaccine clinical breakthrough validates the technology’s potential, with AI deeply involved in drug design, highlighting the value across the industry chain. The support system for innovative drugs and medical devices continues to improve.

At the midday close on August 26, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.70%, the Shenzhen Component Index rose 1.20%, and the ChiNext Index rose 1.37%. Sectors such as industrial metals, metal lead, and metal zinc led the gains.

In the ETF sector, the Huaxia Hang Seng Healthcare ETF (159892) rose 1.10%. Among its constituent stocks, Sinopharm/ Xinda Bio and Kangfang Bio jumped more than 5%, while Hansoh Pharma, BeiGene, China Biopharmaceutical, Shijiazhuang Pharma Group, Ascentage Pharma, Innovent Bio-B, Sinopharm Holding, and Yabao Pharma, among others, also rose.

On the news front, cooperation on mRNA cancer vaccines and clinical breakthroughs have boosted market expectations. CanSino announced that its subsidiary has reached a strategic cooperation agreement with Dpuishi Bio on the joint development of mRNA personalized therapeutic cancer vaccines, driving the company’s stock to a daily trading limit. Earlier, a Reuters report on August 19 said that in late-stage trials, an individualized mRNA cancer vaccine developed jointly by Moderna and Merck achieved its primary endpoint, reducing the risk of melanoma recurrence and spread. This major achievement validated the enormous potential of mRNA technology in cancer treatment and significantly strengthened market expectations for innovation prospects in the biopharmaceutical sector.

Caitong Securities said that breakthroughs in individualized mRNA vaccines will provide long-term catalysts for personalized cancer treatment. The R&D of individualized vaccines requires precise and efficient screening and mRNA synthesis. Precise tumor sequencing is the foundation for designing individualized mRNA neoantigens. AI is deeply involved in neoantigen prediction, sequence design, and delivery optimization; the dual narrative of AI plus mRNA is expected to resonate together. Relevant upstream and downstream industrial chain components—such as tumor NGS sequencing, upstream plasmids, tool enzymes, cap analogs, nucleotides and other raw materials, as well as CDMO value with large-scale production capacity—will stand out.

China Post Securities pointed out that by reviewing multiple sets of data, we summarized three core elements for understanding mRNA tumor vaccine therapy. 1) Treatment regimen: mRNA vaccines are suitable to be used in combination with ICIs (immune checkpoint inhibitors), entering from adjuvant therapy. Using ICIs post-surgery across multiple tumor types has a high recurrence rate and there is a clear unmet need. mRNA tumor vaccines can be combined with ICIs to achieve a 1+1>2 therapeutic effect, expanding the treatment boundaries of each modality. 2) Specificity of the therapy: customized multi-antigen design is expected to overcome tumor heterogeneity and induce long-term immunity. 3) Deep integration of AI in the drug-design core is a differentiated barrier for individualized mRNA tumor vaccines.

Shanghai Securities believes that the (Healthy China “14th Five-Year Plan”) and the (Universal Healthcare Security “14th Five-Year Plan”) were recently released. Policies have clearly specified development goals and implementation requirements, and the support system for innovative drugs and medical devices across the entire value chain has been continuously improved. Moderna’s Phase III clinical trial for its cancer vaccine has reached its endpoint, marking a milestone breakthrough for mRNA therapies. It is recommended to focus on: Hengrui Medicine, BeiGene, Sinopharm Biotech, and Junshi Technologies, among others.

Huaxin Securities noted that on August 19, 2026, Moderna and Merck jointly announced that their combined regimen of the mRNA cancer vaccine IntismeranAutogene and KEYTRUDA produced positive results in adjuvant treatment of completely resected Stage IIB-IV melanoma patients. IntismeranAutogene is an individualized mRNA cancer vaccine, distinct from off-the-shelf vaccines. The tumor antigens included in IntismeranAutogene are obtained after tumor biopsy, sequencing, screening, and optimization. In the clinical trial group, 99.1% of the antigens were unique, with only 0.9% overlap. One of the important reasons for the clinical failure of prior tumor vaccines was tumor antigen heterogeneity. mRNA tumor vaccines address this issue through individualized design, which is an important milestone for developing tumor vaccines. Currently, Moderna and Merck are also advancing adjuvant treatment studies in non-small-cell lung cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer, while main treatment for advanced melanoma is also under way. This suggests that in the future, mRNA cancer vaccines will not be limited to a single tumor type or only scenarios aimed at controlling cancer recurrence; there is hope they may be used in combination with K-drug (Keytruda) to enter critical early-stage development. Moderna is also continuously iterating its mRNA vaccine technology platform. The second-generation technology will consider sustained treatment and cost issues for individualized vaccines, developing off-the-shelf vaccines that are broadly usable and have substantial protective efficacy. For the third-generation technology, the mRNA technology will be combined with TCE and in vivo CAR-T to further improve tumor response rates. In the future, mRNA cancer vaccines are expected to become a major growth engine in cancer immunotherapy.
