The traditional financial system may be the toughest competitor Dusk will face.

When people compare public-chain competition, they tend to focus on things like TPS, privacy technology, or ecosystem scale. But if Dusk’s goal is to serve regulated assets, I believe what it truly needs to prove isn’t that it’s “stronger than another chain,” but whether it can replace some of the inefficient processes in traditional finance that have already been running for years.

Traditional finance’s advantage is maturity: there are clearly defined parties for legal responsibilities, custody arrangements, and compliance workflows. The problem is that when different institutions collaborate, a large share of the cost comes from manual review, data synchronization, and system integration. Dusk isn’t designed to overthrow these systems; instead, it tries to move parts of these processes into on-chain rules. For example, Citadel uses selective disclosure proofs to establish investor eligibility; Phoenix protects transaction details through zero-knowledge proofs; and DuskDS provides settlement infrastructure. For institutions, the value isn’t just “putting things on-chain,” but reducing friction in information handoffs.

But there are also clear trade-offs: traditional systems sacrifice openness for stability, while on-chain infrastructure gives up some simplicity in exchange for verifiability. The deeper the rules go into the underlying layers, the easier it may be to fit financial workflows—but the costs of development, maintenance, and regulatory coordination will also rise.

So my view is: Dusk’s biggest competitor isn’t a particular privacy chain, but the part of the traditional financial system that “isn’t willing to change” yet is limited in efficiency. This view holds only if, once institutions adopt it, the coordination costs across issuance, transfer, and audit really decrease—not if it merely replaces them with a more complex technical architecture.
