Salvador "Bitcoin Beach" Daily Payments Cool Off, Merchants Say They Only Received One BTC in a Month

In a Shen Chao TechFlow update, on August 26, according to Cryptopolitan, Bitcoin Core development contributor Jon Atack said that he recently paid at a restaurant in El Zonte, El Salvador (“Bitcoin Beach”) using BTC, and the cashier told him it was the first Bitcoin payment the店 had received in nearly a month. Local merchants say that consumers are currently widely using cards instead, and some staff members are even unfamiliar with how to use Bitcoin payment apps.
The report notes that BTC price volatility, the payment process being less convenient than card payments, and the tendency of BTC holders to hold long-term rather than spend have collectively reduced the local BTC’s daily circulation. Although El Salvador still retains Bitcoin’s status as legal tender, under the IMF loan arrangements it has made merchants’ acceptance of BTC voluntary.
