According to Axios, a 2-1 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit could block Republicans from using party committees and joint fundraising committees to buy political TV ads at discounted candidate rates. The court said the Federal Communications Commission was wrong to extend those lower broadcast rates to political parties and committees that include non-candidate groups for ads coordinated with candidates. Republicans plan to appeal, setting up another campaign finance fight ahead of November. The case was brought by four Democratic candidates this cycle: Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, former Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, former Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina and Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet of Michigan. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that limits on how much committees can spend in coordination with campaigns were unconstitutional, and Republicans had believed that decision, along with FCC guidance, would let party committee money go further. The ruling applies to both parties.
