The Thailand Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has just issued an announcement regarding two important draft regulatory amendments for the crypto industry, inviting public comments, which has drawn widespread attention from the Southeast Asian crypto market.
The scope of this public consultation mainly consists of two core parts: first, a proposed regulatory framework draft for establishing crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Thailand; and second, proposed principles concerning revisions to the qualification requirements for foreign digital asset custodians employed by investment digital asset mutual funds (MFs) and private funds (PFs).
The Thailand SEC has clearly stated that the purpose of releasing these two proposals is to further expand the range of investment options available to investors, improve the service capabilities of relevant business operators, and promote the diversification of crypto products in Thailand’s capital market. At the same time, it will establish unified and clear industry standards for offshore custody of digital assets for various related funds.
As one of the regions in Southeast Asia with a relatively proactive regulatory attitude toward crypto assets, Thailand’s move to advance and implement a compliant framework for crypto ETFs is undoubtedly an important step for industry development. Once the framework is in place, it will likely attract more traditional capital to enter the crypto market through compliant channels, making it well worth continued monitoring of subsequent progress.
