First, let’s look at the official core narrative selling points. Dusk partnered with the Dutch licensed exchange NPEX to tokenize securities worth hundreds of millions of euros, focusing on compliance and auditable privacy under the MiCA framework. From the perspectives of licensing and business rollout, this logic is indeed very enticing—and also forms a moat that sets it apart from ordinary privacy coins. But the problem is precisely here: traditional financial institutions want ultra-strict compliance entry, legal certainty, and predictable settlement costs, while a chain-native ecosystem wants permissionless decentralization, high-frequency speculation, and free arbitrage.
When these two demands are placed into the same tokenomics and node model, the conflict becomes obvious. Dusk sets a direct staking threshold of 1,000 DUSK and a block reward decay and release period lasting up to 36 years. Network security heavily relies on nodes staying continuously online and being incentivized for validation. But reality is harsh: if the real “main event” on-chain is truly regulated assets like NPEX, trading will tend to concentrate on weekdays and be tightly controlled by strict whitelists. In that case, the chain’s everyday Gas consumption is very likely to remain low-frequency for the long term. Once a public chain lacks high-frequency, native DeFi protocols to consume Gas, it becomes easy to fall into the awkward situation of “slow institutional onboarding, insufficient retail liquidity, and node revenue propped up entirely by token inflation.”
Next, looking at the newly launched DuskEVM test environment, the official clearly wants to attract external developers through Solidity compatibility to make up for the lack of chain activity. But as I said yesterday, the complexity of compliant privacy hasn’t disappeared out of thin air—it’s just been shoved into developers’ logic. If a developer wants to build a native decentralized lending/borrowing protocol on Dusk, they not only have to deal with the costly overhead of ZK proofs, but also must constantly ensure that compliant audit interfaces won’t break the protocol’s permissionless nature. This double burden—having both institutional compliance and a decentralized ecosystem—makes it quite hard when competing for developers with Arbitrum, Base, and other general-purpose L2s that pursue efficiency above all else.
No matter how elegant the underlying mathematical design is, if you can’t straighten out the feedback loop between institutional assets and native liquidity, even a hardcore architecture can easily turn into a beautiful ghost town. Get a clear view of the real on-chain data first—don’t blindly get swept up.
