The U.S. sanctions Iran, for the first time listing digital assets on the registry!
The U.S. Treasury’s new round of sanctions against Iran covers digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. Bessent calls it an “economic D-Day.” Trump pressures countries to cut off all dealings. The U.S. has reportedly identified nearly 60 entities, and this year it has seized nearly $1 billion in cryptocurrency assets.
For the first time, a sanctions list explicitly includes digital assets—yet it actually strengthens the position of $BTC . Iran has settled the Hormuz tolls using BTC and has also accepted contracts with cryptocurrency payment terms. By doing this, the U.S. is essentially acknowledging that digital assets can bypass the dollar system. With blockchain transparency, so-called “zero leakage” is hard to truly achieve.
In the short term, demand from the sanctioned parties to hoard BTC will rise. In the long run, the logic of Bitcoin as a non-sovereign asset will continue to be reinforced. The current 81,000 is not the end. The more the U.S. treats the dollar as a weapon, the more obvious Bitcoin’s role as a substitute becomes. I will share updates on the next stages of sanctions and market reactions in the chatroom.
