$XAUT Shares of Turkish banks surge.. A sudden decision by the central bank restores confidence in the lira

Banking shares listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange jumped by more than 4% during Monday’s trading, after the Turkish Central Bank resumed one-week repurchase auctions. This move brought bank funding operations back to the level of the main interest rate, which is 37%.

The Turkish Central Bank conducted a one-week repurchase auction worth 1 billion Turkish lira, equivalent to about $20.8 million, at a simple interest rate of 37%, while the compound interest rate reached 44.6%.

In light of the decision, the main index of the Istanbul Stock Exchange, BIST 100, opened up 0.9% at 14,637 points—an increase of 122 points from the previous session close—before rising to 14,650 points, then later pared back some of its gains.
