The United States’ new round of 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods has officially taken effect, covering multiple sectors including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, and more. Canadian Prime Minister Carney subsequently announced that, starting September 8, “dollar-for-dollar” retaliatory measures would be implemented, targeting U.S. steel, dairy products, home appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper products, and electronic goods.
What’s more troublesome is that after three straight days of negotiations, talks between the two sides ultimately broke down, and there are currently no new scheduled meetings. The Canada-U.S. annual trade in goods and services is close to $880 billion. With tariffs continuing to hit each other, it’s easy for inflation and supply-chain costs to be pushed higher again, and markets will need to reprice the interest-rate path.
Once the tariffs actually land, macro risk assets get another “thunderbolt.”
