Nomura Holdings’ Laser Digital Japan has completed its registration as a crypto asset exchange service provider under Japan’s Payment Services Act, under registration number 00032. The license has ended the situation in Japan where no new crypto asset exchange service providers had been registered for nearly four years. Laser Digital Japan has also joined the Japan Virtual and Crypto Asset Exchange Association.

At present, the license covers six assets: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, and Shiba Inu, all of which are listed on the industry association’s green list. In its initial phase, the company mainly provides liquidity to licensed crypto asset businesses in Japan; trading services for professional investors have not yet announced a go-live date.

In terms of regulatory requirements, customer assets are segregated from company assets. At least 95% of customers’ crypto assets must be stored in offline cold wallets, and this must be verified through an annual audit. The license does not cover crypto asset derivatives and does not permit the launch of ETFs.
