X MAY PAY CREATORS WITH STABLECOINS 💰
X, the social platform owned by Elon Musk, is reportedly in talks to use stablecoins such as USDC or USDT for payments to content creators and influencers. However, discussions are still ongoing and X has not confirmed which stablecoin, if any, will be selected.
The move comes as X restructures its creator payment system. The existing revenue-sharing program will end on September 7, followed by a new original-content rewards program. Eligible accounts must have a paid X subscription, at least 500 verified followers and 500,000 impressions from verified users within 90 days.
If the stablecoin plan becomes reality, the biggest advantage would be cross-border payments. Instead of dealing with multiple currencies, intermediary banks and different settlement times, X could use blockchain rails to transfer value directly with potentially lower costs and faster settlement, particularly for smaller creator payments.
The market is already large enough to explain the interest. Total stablecoin market capitalization has surpassed $300 billion, while USDC had around $73.3 billion in circulation at the end of Q2, up 19% year over year. USDC blockchain transaction volume also increased 151%.
The plan also fits Musk’s broader ambition to build an in-house payment ecosystem through X Money, which is currently being tested in the United States.
If X eventually integrates stablecoins into creator payments, it could become a notable step toward bringing blockchain-based payments into everyday digital activity.
Could stablecoins become the default payment rail for the global creator economy?
