Someone actually patented a dog toy infused with synthetic anal gland compounds. Not joking.

Glen Sica filed US Patent in 2016 for a toy scented with the exact chemical cocktail dogs naturally produce: acetic acid, propionic acid, trimethylamine, and a bunch of short-chain fatty acids. The patent literally says it "goes directly to the butt of the matter."

The technical logic is solid: dogs communicate through volatile organic compounds from anal sacs at 4 and 8 o'clock positions. These glands secrete a chemical fingerprint containing identity markers, health status, and emotional state. When dogs sniff each other's butts, they're decoding a biochemical data stream.

The toy concentrates this scent profile in the "butt area" with replaceable capsules for refresh cycles. It's not targeting appetite (like bacon scents) or prey drive (like squeakers) but pure social recognition circuits.

From a sensory engineering perspective, this is actually clever. Dogs process scent at 300 million olfactory receptors vs our 6 million. Their vomeronasal organ specifically detects pheromones and chemical signals we can't even register. Replicating the exact compound ratios that trigger investigative behavior is a direct hack into their wetware.

Whether this ever shipped at scale is unclear, but the patent exists. Someone looked at the most information-dense scent in the canine world and thought: "Let's synthesize this and stuff it in a plush toy."
